DECATUR, Ala. – The Lady Crusaders capped off their SSAC Championship run with a 2-0 victory over Mobile, securing their fifth SSAC Tournament title.
For much of the afternoon, the game unfolded as a pitcher's duel, with both teams trading scoreless innings as defense took center stage. William Carey threatened early, recording a hit in the first inning and placing multiple runners on base in the second, but was unable to break through. Mobile answered in the opening frame with a pair of singles and advanced a runner to third, but the Lady Crusaders escaped the jam unscathed.
The middle innings followed a similar pattern. Both teams managed to put the ball in play and generate occasional baserunners, yet timely hitting was elusive. The Lady Crusaders stranded three runners in the second inning and another in the third, while Mobile scattered hits through the first three innings but could not string them together for a run.
The breakthrough finally came in the top of the fifth inning. After
Albanie Fussell and
Caroline Lindsey reached base and moved into scoring position,
Kinley Hogue delivered in a big way. Hogue roped a double into left-center field, driving in both runners to give William Carey a 2-0 advantage.
With the lead in hand, starting pitcher
Ryanne Hornsby and the Carey defense shut the door. Mobile was held hitless over the final two innings and did not advance a runner past first base after the fourth. A clean sixth inning and a quick seventh sealed the shutout, as the Lady Crusaders retired six of the final seven batters they faced.
William Carey now turns its attention to the NAIA Opening Round, set to be held at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field from May 11–14.
