NEW ORLEANS, La. – After a quiet start at the plate, the William Carey offense came alive over the final six innings, scoring in five of those frames to earn a 10–1 non-conference victory over Southern University New Orleans.
The game was scoreless through three innings before the Crusaders broke through in the top of the fourth.
Hays Carley led off with a double to center field and advanced to third on
Jayden Mark's flyout.
Taylor Walters then lifted a deep fly ball to center that allowed Carley to score, giving Carey a 1–0 lead.
Momentum shifted decisively in the fifth inning as the Crusaders sent seven batters to the plate and plated three runs.
Cam Senior opened the frame with a single, followed by a double to left from
Alan McClean.
Gage Hinnant drove in McClean with an RBI single, then stole second and moved to third on the throw.
DeeJay Booth followed with an RBI double, and Carley capped the rally with a run-scoring single to push the advantage to 4–0.
Carey added to its lead in the sixth when Senior launched a solo home run to right field, extending the margin to 5–0. Southern answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring its lone run after a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly accounted for an unearned run, trimming the deficit to 5–1.
Any momentum the Jaguars gained was short-lived, as Carey broke the game open in the seventh inning by scoring four runs without recording a hit. The outburst included a bases-loaded walk by Mark, a sacrifice fly from Walters, a run scored on a passed ball, and an RBI groundout from Ducksworth, stretching the lead to 9–1.
The Crusaders capped the scoring in the ninth when Ducksworth singled home
Weston Wales, who had entered the game as a pinch runner and later stole second base.
The WCU pitching staff was dominant throughout the contest, limiting Southern to just two hits and one unearned run while holding the Jaguars hitless in seven of the nine innings.
Blaise Lalonde earned the win after tossing six strong innings with eight strikeouts.
Offensively, Hinnant,
Franklin Hernandez, Carley, and Senior each produced multi-hit performances for the Crusaders.
William Carey returns to action on March 27, traveling to Mobile, Ala., to face the University of Mobile in SSAC play. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Mike Jacobs Field.
