Crusader Tennis Sweeps SSAC Round-Up with 3–0 Weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The WCU men's tennis team took care of business at the SSAC Round-Up, finishing a perfect 3–0 with wins over Abraham Baldwin (ABAC), UT-Southern, and Blue Mountain Christian.
 
The Crusaders opened play Thursday at Lagoon Park with a 6–1 victory over ABAC. Carey seized control early by sweeping all three doubles matches to grab the opening point.
 
Vinh Nguyen extended the lead to 2–0 with a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles, edging a 7–6 first set before cruising to a 6–1 victory in the second. Islam Orynbassar put the Crusaders one point closer to clinching with a dominant 6–0, 6–2 win at No. 2 singles. ABAC stayed alive when Luka Blanche earned a 6–3, 6–4 win at No. 3 singles, but Simon Muntwyler sealed the match for Carey with a 6–3, 6–1 victory at No. 5.
 
Leo Phijidvijan and Jean Nicolas Leblanc also picked up singles wins for WCU, with Phijidvijan winning 6–2, 6–3 and Leblanc earning a 6–2, 6–4, 10–2 victory.
 
On Friday against UT-Southern, the Firehawks claimed the opening doubles point. Muntwyler evened the score with a 6–1, 6–2 win at No. 4 singles, and Nguyen put Carey ahead with a 6–2, 6–1 victory at No. 2 singles. Phil Louis Steinbichler moved the Crusaders within one point of the win with a 6–4, 6–4 decision at No. 6 singles, though UT-Southern stayed alive with a win at No. 1 singles.
 
Phijidvijan clinched the match with a 6–3, 6–4 victory at No. 5 singles, and Leblanc closed out the contest with a 6–2, 7–5 win at No. 3.
 
Carey completed the weekend with a straight sweep on Saturday against Blue Mountain Christian. The Crusaders opened the match by sweeping doubles before Leblanc, Muntwyler, and Steinbichler each posted 6–0, 6–0 wins in singles.
 
Phijidvijan made it 5–0 with a 6–2, 6–0 victory at No. 5 singles. Orynbassar followed with a 6–0, 6–1 win at No. 2 singles, and Nguyen completed the sweep with a 6–2, 6–3 victory at No. 1.
 
The Crusaders return to action on April 1, when they host SSAC foe Loyola University.
