HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball team closed out its weekend slate on Saturday afternoon with a 7–4 loss to Campbellsville at Milton Wheeler Field.
The Tigers wasted no time grabbing control, pushing across three runs in the opening inning. After Aanthony Esposito led off with a single, Antony Gilbert delivered an RBI double to left to start the scoring. Two batters later, Thomas Krueger added another RBI double, and Tyler Hummel capped the fast start with an RBI single, giving Campbellsville a 3–0 advantage.
Campbellsville extended its lead in the second inning. With two runners aboard, Joaquin Hernandez lined a two-run single to make it 5–0, and Gilbert followed with a sacrifice fly to score Esposito and stretch the margin to six.
The Crusaders responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Jayden Mark singled, and
Nic Arender drew a walk before
Hays Carley punched a one-out single to center, bringing home pinch-runner
Weston Wales for Carey's first run of the day. However, back-to-back strikeouts halted the rally and left two men stranded.
The Tigers added their final run in the fourth when Krueger's sacrifice fly scored Gilbert, who had singled, stole second, and advanced to third on an error. Carey answered in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with one out.
Tyler Ducksworth lifted a sac fly to center to score
Taylor Walters, but Campbellsville again limited the damage to a single run.
The Crusaders mounted another push in the fifth, opening the inning with four straight hits leading to a run with
Cam Senior driving in another run, and Carey cut the deficit to 7–4, but once again the Tigers worked out of trouble, stranding runners on second and third. That proved to be Carey's last major threat, as they were held to just one hit over the final two innings.
William Carey returns to action on Tuesday, February 10, traveling to Clinton, Miss., to face Mississippi College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
