HATTIESBURG, Miss. – William Carey opened a four-game homestand in dominant fashion Friday night at Milton Wheeler Field, taking game one 8–4 before rolling to a 23–2 victory in the nightcap against Williams Baptist.
Game One
Williams Baptist threatened right away with back-to-back singles to open the game, but Carey starter
Matthew Davis quickly extinguished the rally with a 4–6–3 double play and a strikeout.
The Crusaders struck immediately in the bottom half. A hit-by-pitch, single, and a bunt single loaded the bases for
Jayden Mark, who delivered a two-run single to left to open the scoring. Moments later, a bunt single from
Hays Carley forced a throwing error that allowed another run to cross. With two still aboard,
Franklin Hernandez ripped a double down the left-field line, driving in two more and giving Carey a commanding 5–0 lead after one inning.
Carley added an RBI double in the second to push the margin to 6–0.
Williams Baptist responded in the fourth, capitalizing on a leadoff single and a throwing error. RBI hits from M. Andrews and S. Morrison, followed by a two-run single from W. Riley, trimmed the deficit to 6–4.
Carey answered immediately. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, consecutive hits from
Roth John and
DeeJay Booth, followed by a walk to Carley, loaded the bases for
Taylor Walters, who drove a two-run single to left to restore breathing room at 8–4.
Davis and reliever
Jackson Hawsey shut things down from there, allowing just one hit over the final three innings to secure the game-one win.
Game Two
The Crusaders once again jumped on the board early. In the bottom of the first,
DeeJay Booth jump-started the scoring with a solo homer to right, and Hernandez added a two-run single to left-center to make it 3–0.
Williams Baptist put up two runs on three hits in the top of the second, but Carey blew the game open in the bottom half. A walk and two singles loaded the bases, and the Crusaders plated six runs—without recording a hit—thanks to additional walks and three hit-by-pitches.
Alan McClean delivered the first RBI hit of the inning with a single to center, and Booth capped the explosive frame with a three-run double into the right-center gap, stretching the lead to 13–2.
Carey kept the pressure on in the third.
Hays Carley led off with a double, and later in the inning
Cam Senior delivered a two-run double down the left-field line. McClean added an RBI single, and a heads-up double-play sequence still produced another run as the Crusaders ballooned the lead to 17–2.
A sacrifice fly from
Jack Jordan in the fourth pushed the margin to 18–2. In the fifth,
Clayton Williamson crushed a grand slam to left to make it 22–2, and Jordan added the final tally with a solo shot in the sixth.
William Carey wraps up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader against Williams Baptist starting at 12:00 p.m.
