DECATUR, Ala. – The Lady Crusaders claim a second walk off victory in a row as they take down Brewton Parker 5-4 after a weather delay forced the game to be split over two days.
The Lady Crusaders got their offense going early, going 1-0 ahead in the first inning.
Lilli Robertson drew a walk and stole second before a ground out allowed her to get on 3
rd.
Albanie Fussell singled through the left side to bring Robertson home and put WCU up early.
Carey then continued the offense in the second inning, adding another couple of runs.
Anna Grace Shows &
Liz Cross got themselves on base before back-to-back singles from Robertson and
Laila Clark allowed both runners to come home to put the Lady Crusaders up 3-0 after three innings.
The Lady Barons would not make it easy for Carey as they began to chip away at the lead in the fourth inning. Following two quick outs, BPC got three singles in a row from Kaci Paul, Cailyn Snellgrove, & Eboni Medina. Shelby Aiken then drew a bases loaded walk to pull a run back for Brewton Parker. A fielder's choice out at 2
nd ended the inning to limit the damage to just one run.
5
th inning and BPC pulled another run back to cut the deficit to one, albeit due to a couple of Carey errors. Lexi Bradshaw got herself on base thanks to a fielding error by the Lady Crusaders. Bradshaw then proceeded to steal 2
nd and then reached 3
rd on a throwing error. This all set up Abbey Flowers to single to left center to allow Bradshaw to come across the plate.
Just as it looked like Carey were going to fight off any comeback the Lady Barons dug deep and found the offense they needed to put themselves ahead for the first time in the game. A lead off single and a stolen base by Aiken got her into scoring position early. It would then be another error from the Carey defense that gifted BPC the tying run, allowing Bradshaw to reach 1
st and Aiken to make it across home plate. Bradshaw stole second before a Morgan Willingham double allowed Bradshaw to score and put the Lady Barons up 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 7
th.
Carey got one pitch into the bottom of the 7
th inning before being forced to vacate the field due to a storm nearby. The game eventually ended up getting postponed to early Saturday evening before they were able to restart. The Lady Crusaders were forced to wait over 24 hours to finish the remaining half inning knowing they needed to come back raring to go to erase the deficit they found themselves in in the top of the inning.
WCU gave themselves hope early with Robertson reaching base on a fielding error. One out later and Fussell singled to right field to get runners on 1
st and 2
nd. With the tying and go ahead runs on base, Carey needed a big hit to bring them home. Up stepped
Julia Shaw who sent a double into right center, scoring both runners, and giving Carey the walk off victory for the second time in two days.
The Lady Crusaders are back in action Sunday morning as they face Middle Georgia at 9:30 AM for a spot in the SSAC Championship.
