Game Recap: Baseball |

Crusaders Take Both Games Against Point

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball Team took both games of a double header against Point University Friday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.

Offense was on full display in game one, as there were a combined 30 runs scored on 28 hits. Carey struck first with two runs in the first inning on a Josh Alexander two RBI single to center.

Point cut the lead in half in the top of the second on a leadoff homerun by Zavion Anderson, but the Crusaders broke the game wide open in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, DeeJay Booth delivered an RBI single to right field with Preston Ratliff making it 5-1 Carey with a double down the left field line.

After an error and a walk, Jayden Mark kept things going with a single to left, scoring Tyler Ducksworth and Ratliff with Rigoberto Hernandez capping the scoring with a two RBI single to make 9-1 WCU.

The Crusaders kept up the attack and in the bottom of the third extended their lead to 14 with six runs on four hits. Ratliff started the scoring with a single to left and after a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Ducksworth scored Booth on a sac fly to right.

Later in the inning, Mark picked up his third RBI on a single to left with Hernandez picking up his third and fourth RBI to make it 14-1 WCU. Eli Collins plated the final run of the frame with a single to left. The Skyhawks would not quietly and in the fourth cut the deficit to eight with six runs of their own.

The Crusaders answered though, pushing their lead to twelve on RBIs by Booth, Cam Trosclair, and Ducksworth (2). The Skyhawks got one run back in the sixth but again Carey answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on a Cam Senior single to left to make it 21-8 with Point scoring the final run of the game in the seventh.

Game two was the polar opposite of the first, as there were a combined four hits over the first four innings of the game. That all changed in the fifth though, as the Crusaders broke the deadlock with five runs on four hits.

With two outs in the inning and runners on first and second, Ratliff drove in the first run on a single to right with Ducksworth following, scoring Booth on an infield single. Alexander then stepped to the plate, clearing the bases with a three-run shot to right field.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Carey put the game away with three runs on three hits. Alexander added two more RBIs to his day with a double to left center to score Ducksworth and Ratliff. Mark followed with an RBI single to center for the final margin.

The duo of Matthew Davis and Luke Lycette did the rest, as they scattered seven hits across nine innings while striking out eleven to seal the shutout victory.

Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they wrap up the series with a single game beginning at 1:00 pm at Milton Wheeler Field.
