Lady Crusaders Fall to LSU-Alexandria

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lady Crusaders drop a pair of games to No. 15 LSU-Alexandria Tuesday night at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.

Game one saw a pitchers' duel, as both combined to give up five hits over the first innings. Each team had some early chances getting a runner into scoring position with neither cashing in.

That was the case until the sixth inning, when the Generals led off the inning with a single and after a sac bunt moved the runner to second base, Julia Kwakernaak broke the deadlock with a double down the left field line.

With WCU down to their final out, Lilli Robertson kept the inning alive with a single and Liz Cross followed, delivering the game tying single to left center to send the game into extra innings. With the international tie-breaker rule in place, and aggressive base running, the Generals retook the lead in the eighth on a groundout to first. LSUA starting pitcher Haley Primrose then worked a clean bottom half of the inning to seal the victory.

Game two was nothing like the first, as there were a combined 24 runs on 28 hits. LSU-Alexandria started the scoring with two runs in the first inning and four more in the second on three hits and three errors.

Carey got one run back in the third on a Madison Prejean RBI single with both teams adding a pair of runs in the fourth with Robertson driving in both for the Lady Crusaders. In the fifth, back-to-back errors put the Lady Crusaders within three runs at 8-5. After a two out walk loaded the bases, Robertson added to her RBI total with a single to right, scoring Cross and Kinley Hogue with aggressive base running by Anna Grace Shows tying the game at eight.

The game would not be tied for long though, as the Generals plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning. WCU got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on a passed ball, but LSUA made it 13-9 with two runs in the seventh inning. The Lady Crusaders threatened in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on a Laila Clark single to center but would get no closer, as relief pitcher Primrose induced a pop out to third to end the threat.

WCU is back in action Friday, March 21, as they take on Point University in SSAC action. Play is set to begin at 3:00 pm at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
