TIFTON, Ga, - The William Carey Baseball Team wrapped up a three-game series against Abraham Baldwin with a 5-0 victory in game one but dropped the final game 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Stallion Field.
Â
"After a couple of well-played games, we seemed to wait around against a very competitive starter for them," said Head Coach
Bobby Halford. "Thought we struck out too much offensively and gave up too many free passes from our relievers. We are disappointed but we will bounce back next week."
Â
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Crusader offense came to life with two outs in the third inning.
Rigoberto Hernandez and
Bridley Thomas kept the inning alive with back-to-back base hits.
Â
Eli Collins then followed with a bases clearing double to right field and
Preston Ratliff capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run homerun. Carey added an insurance run in the fourth inning thanks to a defensive miscue by ABAC.
Â
Starting pitcher
Matthew Davis did the rest, scattering five hits and allowed only three base runners to reach second base with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work to pick up the win.
Â
Game two saw Carey take the early lead again this time on a solo home run by
Tyler Ducksworth in the second. The lead was short lived, as the Stallions evened things at one apiece with a run in the third and would take their first lead of the week on a two RBI single by Joe Cooney in the fifth.
Â
The Crusaders got one run back in the sixth on a sac fly by Ratliff, but the Stallions pushed the lead back to two with a run in the seventh. Collins launched a solo shot in the eighth to get WCU within one but that would be as close as they would get, as Lalan Ellis worked a clean ninth.
Â
WCU is back in action Wednesday, February 19, as they head to New Orleans, La. to take on Dillard University in non-conference action. Play is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
