Crusaders Hold On to Defeat Oklahoma Wesleyan

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball Team outlasted Oklahoma Wesleyan, defeating the Eagles 6-5 in the opening game of the NAIA Baseball Opening Round Monday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.

OKWU took the early lead with two runs in the first but Carey responded with five runs in the second.  Billy Garrity got things going with a one out double and would come around to score on a Caleb Laird single to left.  Jerod Williams would make it three hits in row with an RBI single to center to tie the game.

With two outs in the innings, Jake Lycette would keep the inning alive, scoring two with a double down the rightfield line.  Preston Ratliff followed with a single to center to score Lycette to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Eagles would get within one run in the fourth inning, scoring a run on a wild pitch with the other coming on a sac fly.  The Crusaders would pick up an insurance run in the sixth on a RBI single by RJ Stinson.  That run would prove the difference, as the Eagles would get a run in the seventh on a solo homerun by Josh Logan.

Luke Lycette and John Snyder would then work a three up three down eighth and ninth inning to secure the win.  L. Lycette picked up the win on the mound going four innings allowing just one run on three hits with five strikeouts with Snyder earning his 13th save of the season.

Carey will back in action tomorrow May 14, as they take on the winner out of Mid-America Christian and Milligan.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm at Milton Wheeler Field.
