Lady Crusaders Sweep Mobile in SSAC Action

MOBILE, Ala. – The William Carey Softball Team picked up two big conference wins over Mobile with a 5-4 decision in game one and a 3-2 victory in extra innings Tuesday afternoon.

Both teams went back and forth with the Lady Crusaders taking the early lead with two runs in the first, as they capitalized on a defensive miscue to score the first run with a Liz Cross scoring Rachel Rodriguez.  The lead would be short lived, as the Rams would get two runs the second but Carey would retake the lead in the third on a bases loaded walk.

WCU would extend their lead in the fourth, as Brooke Tanner led off the inning with a triple down the leftfield line and would score on a sac fly by Rodriguez.  Mobile would threaten in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs but starting pitcher Ryanne Hornsby was able to limit the damage just one run to hold on to a 4-3 lead.

However, UM would not go quietly and in the sixth inning would tie the game once again on a solo homerun.  The Lady Crusaders offense stepped up big in the top of the seventh, as Kinley Hogue followed Albanie Fussell's double with one of her own to score what would be the game winning run.

Game two started like the first with Carey taking the early lead on a Dee Dee West two run homerun in the first inning.  The two run lead would hold until the fifth, as the Rams would load the bases with two outs but just like in game one Hornsby would get out of the jam, surrendering only one run.

However, a costly error in the sixth by the Carey defense would allow the tying the run to cross the plate.  After a scoreless seventh, the game would head to extra innings where the WCU offense found the spark they were needing.

A leadoff single followed by a sac bunt would put Alex Davis on second base.  With two outs in the inning Carley Kidder would play hero with a RBI single up the middle.  Hornsby would then set the Rams down in order in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.

WCU is back in action Saturday, April 27, as they wrap up their regular season with a double header against Stillman.  First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
