Crusaders Rally Late to Defeat Talladega College

2/9/2024 8:59:00 PM

Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball Team used some late inning magic to defeat Talladega College 6-5 Friday night at Milton Wheeler Field.

The Tornadoes got on the board in the first inning on a two RBI single by Armando Jackson but Braydon Coffey put Carey on the board in bottom half of the inning with a two out RBI single.  The 2-1 TC lead would hold until the fourth inning when Talladega pushed one run across the plate and extended their lead to 5-1 two more runs in the fifth.

The Crusaders would get the hit they were looking for in the sixth inning.  With runners on first and second and two outs, RJ Stinson kept the inning alive with a single to centerfield scoring Brady Wilson with a wild pitch plating Bridley Thomas to get WCU within two runs.

In the eighth inning, Carey would complete the comeback with three runs on no hits.  After two hit by pitches and a walk loaded the bases with one out a passed ball would push the first run the across.  After Talladega intentionally walked Jake Lycette to load the bases again, Bailee Hendon would draw a walk to score Jerod Williams to tie the game.  Preston Ratliff would then come to the plate and deliver the game winner on a sac fly.

Mason Smith would get the win in relief going three innings with no hits and four strikeouts with John Snyder earning the save.

Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they take on Georgia Gwinnett and Talladega.  First pitch against GGC is scheduled for 3:00 pm with the game against the Tornadoes to follow.
