HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Baseball Team bounced back from their season opening loss with a 12-3 victory over Missouri Baptist and a 6-1 win over Campbellsville University Friday evening at Milton Wheeler Field.
Just like in the Friday night game MBU used the long ball to strike the first blow with a solo shot in the third to take the early 1-0 lead. The Spartans extended their lead in the top of the fourth on two RBI singles to make it 3-0.
However, the Crusader offense in the bottom half of the inning found the spark they needed. After back to back bases loaded walks pushed two runs across
Jerod Williams drove in
Brady Wilson with
Rigoberto Hernandez also scoring to give Carey a 4-3 lead.
Jake Lycette would push another run across on a RBI fielder's choice with
Bailee Hendon driving in the final runs of the inning on a two RBI single to left. The Crusaders would add another run in the fifth and would finish things off with runs in the sixth.
Bobby Magee picked up the win going four innings allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Preston Ratliff earned the save pitching three shutout innings in relief.
In their second game of the day against Campbellsville, Carey once again found themselves trailing after surrendering a run in the second. But once again, the Crusaders were able to erase the deficit in the bottom half of the inning.
A bases loaded walk by
Brady Logan plated the first run with an RBI by
RJ Stinson putting Carey ahead.
Bridley Thomas would cap the scoring in the inning on a RBI fielder's choice. WCU would add the final runs in the sixth on RBIs by J. Williams,
Braydon Coffey, and Thomas.
The Crusader pitching duo of
Dario Herrera and
John Snyder did the rest as they combined for 12 strikeouts (Herrera – 9 & Snyder – 3), the one run on four hits, and only one walk.
Carey is back in action Saturday, as they take on Campbellsville in their final game of the weekend. First is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Milton Wheeler Field.
