Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Softball team battled their way to a series sweep of Blue Mountain Christian University, taking game one 5-1 and game two 3-2 in eight innings, Sunday afternoon at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
Carley Kidder would put Carey up 2-0 with a RBI single in the first and a RBI double in the third inning. WCU would take a 3-0 lead in the fifth on a defensive miscue but the Toppers would get the run back in the top of sixth.
However, the Lady Crusaders would stretch their lead in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly by
Albanie Fussell and an
Alex Davis RBI that scored
Kinley Hogue.
Starting pitcher
Haley Nations did the rest working a clean seventh to preserve the win. Nations worked all seven innings allowing one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in the win.
In game two, both teams were kept off the board until the fourth when BMCU got three straight hits with two outs to push across one run. However,
Dee Dee West would put Carey up with a two run blast to left center but the lead would be short lived as the Toppers managed to push across a run in the fifth to tie the game.
Both teams had some opportunities over the final innings but extra innings would be needed to decide the winner. In the eighth inning with two outs,
Brooke Tanner worked a bases loaded walk for the game winner.
Ryanne Hornsby picked up the win in the circle going eight innings allowing two runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
Carey is back in action Saturday, April 22, as they travel to Montgomery, Ala to take on Faulkner University in SSAC play. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
