HATTIESBURG, Miss. - #15 William Carey Softball split a conference double header against #22 Middle Georgia State, falling in game one 8-7 but taking game two 3-2 in innings, Monday afternoon at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
MGA came out quickly in game one building a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. Carey had an early opportunity in the first inning loading the bases with one out but the Knights were able to work out of the jam. However, in the bottom of the third, the Lady Crusaders finally broke through as back to back bases loaded walks would cut the deficit in half.
WCU would tie things up in the fourth on a two RBI single to center by
Carley Kidder. MGA would retake the lead in the top of the fifth with one run but Carey responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on a
Rachel Rodriguez single to right to make it 6-5 William Carey.
After a scoreless sixth, the Knights retook the lead for good with three runs on three hits. The Lady Crusaders threatened in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run but starting MGA pitcher Beth Eddins once again was able to work out the jam.
The offense was not the same in game two but it was just as thrilling as the first game. After both teams traded a run in the first inning, the score would remain the same until the fourth inning when Middle Georgia would take a 2-1 lead.
The lead would be short lived as
Alex Davis would score
Susie LeBert with a single to the right side in the bottom of the fifth. Extra innings would be needed to decide the winner and it would it be WCU that would prevail, as Kidder would rip a bases loaded single to right center for the game winner.
Carey is back in action Friday, March 24, as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take on Stillman College in SSAC action. First pitch of the double header is slated for 2:00 pm.
