HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Softball team swept a mid-week double header against Bethel (Tenn.), taking game one 13-2 in five innings and game two 9-5, at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
The Lady Crusaders wasted no time establishing their offense in game one, as
Brooke Tanner led off the bottom of the first inning with an inside the park homerun with
Carley Kidder making it 2-0 WCU with a double to right center.
Carey followed up the two run first inning with a three run second inning. A Wildcat error plated the first run and a bases loaded walk by
Susie LeBert would push across another.
Chloe Oliver plated the final run of the frame on a single to left.
Bethel managed to get two runs back in the top of the third. The Lady Crusaders responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning with RBIs by
Dee Dee West, Kidder, LeBert (2), and Oliver to take a 10-2 advantage. WCU finished things off in the fourth with three runs for the final margin.
Haley Nations picked up the win in the circle going four innings allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Things were a little different in game two. Both teams started the game off trading runs in the first, but Carey plated four runs in the second to take a 5-1 lead.
Alex Davis put WCU in front with a RBI single to left and
Brooke Tanner tripled to left center to score two.
Rachel Rodriguez capped the scoring with an RBI single to left.
The Wildcats were not done though as they managed to get two runs in the third and another in the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-4. However, the Lady Crusaders responded once again in the bottom half of the fifth. Back-to-back BU errors would score two runs with Davis and Tanner driving in two runs to extend the WCU lead to 9-4.
